Camper van or car + hotel in Mallorca?

An honest comparison to help you choose, including the cases where a camper van is not the best idea.

    Updated

    In short

A camper van replaces both the rental car and the hotel: you sleep where your day ends, cook some of your meals and never repack a suitcase. A car and hotel suits travellers who want a large bed, eat out every day or mainly stay in Palma. To compare costs, add up the van rental plus campsite fees on one side, and the car rental, hotel nights and parking on the other, for your exact dates.

    Comparing the costs

Prices vary a lot with the season, so compare like for like for your dates:

    • Camper van: the rental (see our pricing page), fuel and overnight fees, roughly 8–15 EUR per 24 h at municipal aires and 25–45 EUR per night at campsites.
    • Car + hotel: the car rental, fuel, hotel nights (often the biggest item in July and August) and parking at the hotel and in towns.
    • Food: the van has a kitchen with a 60-litre fridge, gas stove, pots and dishes, so you can cook some meals instead of eating out twice a day.

    Where a camper van wins

    • Flexibility: change plans with the weather or the wind, and wake up next to a trailhead or a quiet beach.
    • No check-ins and no repacking: your kitchen, bed and luggage travel with you.
    • Sunrises and sunsets: the best light at coves and viewpoints comes before and after the day trippers.
    • One booking instead of two: vehicle and accommodation for one price, with bed linen, towels and kitchen equipment included.

Where a car + hotel wins

    • Space: our van sleeps 2 adults + 1 baby on a 1.20 m × 1.90 m bed. Couples love it, but tall travellers or families with older children will want more room.
    • City breaks: if you mainly want Palma, a hotel and public transport are easier than parking a van in the old town.
    • Driving: our van has a manual gearbox. If you only drive automatics, a car is the safer choice.
    • Routine: with a van you refill fresh water (80-litre tank) and empty grey water (66-litre tank) at aires or campsites every few days.

The rule that changes the maths

Wild camping is forbidden in the Balearic Islands, so a van does not mean free nights: budget for campsites or aires, and book them in high season. See our legal overnight spots guide.

    A hybrid option

Many travellers spend most of the trip in the van and add a hotel night in Palma at the start or the end. Since pickup and return take place in Palma, that is easy to combine. Check prices for your dates on our availability page.

    Frequently asked questions

Is a camper van cheaper than a car and hotel in Mallorca?

It depends on the season and how you travel. The van replaces both the car and the hotel, so compare the van price plus campsite or aire fees with car rental plus hotel nights for the same dates. The difference is usually largest in high season, when hotel prices peak.

Is it easy to drive a camper van in Mallorca?

Yes on main roads and most mountain roads, which a compact van handles well. The tricky parts are old towns and tiny cove car parks: park at the entrance of villages and choose beaches with proper car parks.

Can you sleep anywhere with a camper van in Mallorca?

No. Wild camping is forbidden; plan your nights at campsites, municipal aires or legal parking areas.

How many people fit in the Room2Road camper van?

2 adults + 1 baby. It has a built-in bed, kitchen, toilet, and indoor and outdoor showers.
